Welcome to

First Methodist

Church, Bryan!

This congregation of believers is celebrating over 155 years as a Church Family. Methodists have worshiped the Lord Jesus Christ at our historic location since before Bryan became a city.

We love you because God has first loved us. We offer Christ to our community. We desire that you would have a real, personal and life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. How? Through the power of the Holy Spirit at work in us to LOVE, WITNESS, SERVE. Our core values are to LOVE God with all of our heart, mind, strength and soul and love our neighbor, all of our neighbors, as God loves you. We are called to WITNESS to our faith by proclaiming boldly the saving grace of God through Jesus Christ and living out our faith every day in every way. We believe we are called to SERVE, to show our faith by our works, so we are committed to doing all the good we can in our community for the glory of God.

We invite you to become a part of our First Family and experience our fellowship and God's transforming grace in your life.

Grace and Peace to You,

Pastor Rick Sitton

Senior Pastor

our story

CELEBRATING OVER 155 YEARS

In June of 1868, the First Methodist Episcopal Church, South of Bryan received its first member, Mrs. Smythe. Methodist preachers called “circuit riders” had been holding meetings downtown above a saloon, but First United Methodist Church, Bryan officially began in 1868 and held its first worship service in its first sanctuary in September of 1869. This congregation of believers was founded before Bryan was incorporated as a city in 1871. In 1902 a new sanctuary was built that burned to the ground and a new sanctuary was built in 1906 based on the exact same building plans. On December 10, 1951, the members left the old sanctuary on the corner of Houston and 27th street and walked over to the new sanctuary on Houston and 28th street. We are a historic church with a great legacy, but we are also a contemporary church with a passion for our city and ministries that impact our community.  The congregation voted to disaffiliate from the UMC and join the Global Methodist Church, becoming First Methodist Church, Bryan on January 1, 2023.

what we believe

The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth; and in
Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the
right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence
he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.
